Our Counseling & Wellness services support all persons, regardless of background or trauma — homicide, sexual assault, hate crimes, and domestic violence.

Trauma counseling that inspires healing and hope after traumatic experiences

*You do not need to be a victim to receive our supportive services

Our trauma can be too much for us to carry on our own.
It can negatively impact every aspect of our lives, rob us of our inner peace and well-being, as well as affect important relationships with others.

As a result, some trauma victims turn to drugs or alcohol, reckless behavior, or dangerous activities to try to mask the pain they’re feeling inside. These actions, however, only make matters worse and don’t deal with the real cause: what’s going on inside.

Beneath the surface, traumatic events continue to live on in the minds and hearts of victims. Whether it was one major traumatic event, a recurring event, or something that happened while young, victims of trauma often need professional care to overcome what happened to them.

Trauma counseling helps victims to understand what happened and how to move forward after suffering from traumatic events or situations, such as:
  • Crime
  • Violence
  • Abuse
  • Rape
  • Bullying
  • Victimization
  • Shaming
  • Humiliation

Why trauma counseling is so important

Our body’s natural response is to avoid danger. That means it’s normal for us to be afraid during traumatic events, and for our minds and bodies to react in special ways to help us deal with traumatic situations.

However, our mind and body may not respond in the right way after the danger has passed or go back to the way they worked before the trauma.

As a result, traumatic experiences can cause our mind and body not to function the way we want them to. Additionally, there may be new, unhealthy ways our minds and bodies function as a result of what happened.

This can make us withdraw from those we love and try to manage our feelings and experiences on our own, leading to a condition known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

PTSD can be manifest in a wide variety of mental states and feelings. People with PTSD may feel:
  • Anxious and fearful
  • Depressed and hopeless
  • Angry and irritable
  • Ashamed and self-blaming
  • Isolated, rejected, or disconnected from others
  • Unable to trust people
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

Additionally, PTSD may have physical symptoms in the body:
  • Muscle aches
  • Migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Lack of energy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Heightened sensitivity to sound, temperature, light, etc.

But there’s good news: trauma therapy can give victims the help they need to discover how to move past what happened.

How trauma and PTSD can affect victims

Our trauma counseling offers the professional, supportive care you need to move forward and achieve meaningful growth after your trauma.

Here’s how it works:

1
Reach out and let’s have a conversation

Accepting you need support is a courageous first step. The Parris Foundation understands how hard that can be. That’s why we make it easy and simple to get the personal help that’s right for you.

When you reach out, you’ll speak to someone who is trustworthy and non-judgemental, helping you share your unique experience and situation. These professionals will create a safe space between you and them, where you can begin healing.

We’ll connect you with the counselor you need

We understand that your trauma is unique to you, and that means you need personalized support to move forward.

To provide this unique support, The Parris Foundation will draw from our team of counselors who have been trained in handling different types of trauma. We’ll use this network to connect you with a supportive counselor who understands you, what type of help you need, and how to provide it.

Your counselor will map out a treatment plan

Your counselor will have the education, qualities, and experience needed to provide the specialized care to deal with what happened to you.

This care begins by creating a treatment plan, which includes how often you both meet and where. With your treatment plan, the true change begins to take place.

That’s why we’re ready to provide referrals, resources, and all the support you need to make meaningful progress towards healing.

Your counselor will use an empathetic, trauma-informed, and culturally-competent approach to give you effective trauma counseling. This is true regardless of your treatment plan, or if you receive in-person or telehealth counseling.

Our areas of specialty include:

Individual Therapy
Our one-on-one therapeutic process focuses on helping individuals heal from their specific trauma, build resilience, and develop coping strategies in a safe, supportive environment.

Grief/Loss Support Groups
Facilitated groups provide a safe space for individuals coping with loss to share experiences, process emotions, and receive mutual support.

Parent Education
By means of workshops and sessions, parents are given the tools and strategies they need to support their children through trauma and foster emotional well-being.

Victim Advocacy
To navigate the aftermath of trauma and make a complete recovery, victims receive personalized support and resources, including assistance with accessing legal, medical, and community services.

Trauma counseling from skilled therapists with empathetic ears and compassionate hearts

Each person is unique, as is the trauma they experienced. That means there is no one-size-fits-all approach to trauma.

To meet each individual’s needs, The Parris Foundation utilizes trained counselors to understand each person, what trauma they suffered, and how it affected them. This lets us ensure each person receives the type of counseling that will work best for them.

Answers to commonly asked questions about trauma counseling

What type of counseling is best for trauma?
PTSD can be the result of a variety of traumatic events, such as violence, abuse, rape, bullying, or humiliation.
Additionally, a person who is struggling to deal with their trauma may be experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, shame, or hopelessness.

Anyone who has experienced these events or are suffering from these symptoms may need trauma counseling to help them heal and move forward.
How do I know if I need trauma counseling?
Different people respond best to different trauma therapy methods – it all depends on who they are and what they experienced.

For example, play therapy can help children express themselves and process their trauma in a healthy way that works well for them.

In contrast, grief/loss therapy can provide the unique support needed for those who have lost a spouse or a child.

Additionally, our counselors may use treatments and techniques to promote healing, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Having a trained counselor that understands who a victim is and what they have been through will enable them to identify the best trauma therapy method for the victim as an individual.

What is the best trauma therapy method?
Our trauma counselors first assess the victim’s unique situation, allowing them to develop a treatment plan to help them move forward. This plan will include what type of therapy the victim needs, how often they’ll receive it, and where.

The trauma counselor will then provide ongoing support to the victim on their journey towards recovery. This includes connecting them with other professionals, maintaining records, and sharing resources and information about counseling and trauma.
